IABR: DOWN TO EARTH 2020

9 November 2020

Coming soon! OOZE at the 9th edition of the IABR: DOWN TO EARTH.

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam plans to open the doors on the DOWN TO EARTH’s second exhibition, WHOSE ENERGY IS IT, ANYWAY? on 20 November.

Building on more than three years of research in the IABR–Atelier Rotterdam, the exhibition, curated by George Brugmans (IABR), Eva Pfannes (Ooze Architects and Urbanists) and Thijs van Spaandonk (Bright), proposes answers to key questions around the Energy Transition and its links with local ownership and the commons. The exhibition is built around research results and proposes a comprehensive strategy for a LEAP, a Local Energy Action Plan in Rotterdam's Bospolder Tussendijken.

IABR-DOWN TO EARTH 2020

27 August 2020

How can the energy transition (the upcoming nation-wide shift away from fossil fuels) be used as leverage for socially inclusive urban development? How can we achieve a truly CO2 neutral neighbourhood? What social and governance innovations are necessary to achieve true local ownership over new energy systems?

These are some of the key questions we have been investigating in our work with the IABR-Atelier Rotterdam: Energy Transition as Leverage to develop the LEAP, the Local Energy Action Plan for Bospolder-Tussendijken In Rotterdam. Eva Pfannes is since the spring 2020 the lead designer for the IABR-Atelier Rotterdam.

From late October 2020 onwards we're proud to be showing this work in the exhibition DOWN TO EARTH: ENERGY. WHOSE ENERGY? during the International Architecture Biennale (IABR) in Rotterdam. We present potential answers through a series of speculative scenarios, combining technical, financial, social, and nature based solutions to propose an alternative way forward.

A biennale in times of a pandemic - an anti-biennale: the IABR announced this week that rather than compressing exhibits into a short space of time, it is unfolding its programme over the next ten months, starting in the Keilezaal and moving into the surrounding neighbourhoods in 2021.

We'll be showing the results of our research for a Local Energy Action Plan (LEAP) for the Rotterdam neighbourhood Bospolder-Tussendijken.

More details, including a limited number of workshops and how to plan a visit, will be shared in coming weeks.

The LEAP was commissioned by the IABR-Atelier Rotterdam in autumn 2019. OOZE Architects and Urbanists is working closely with the Gemeente Rotterdam, Joachim Declerque (Architecture Workroom Brussels), Robbert de Vrieze (Delfshaven Cooperatie), Thijs Spanendonck (IABR), further partners include Jurgen van der Heijen (AT Osborne), Ruud Ghering (Studio Bouwhaven), Hessel Kok (Bron Technologie), Mimi Slauerhoff, Anne Knoop and the local initiatives in Bospolder-Tussendijken.
